Kitty Has Claws

Jake Delhomme has been exiled to Cleveland, leaving the Panthers with an intriguing three-headed quarterback core of Matt Moore, Jimmy Clausen, and rookie out of Cincinnati Tony Pike . Moore will obviously get the start, since he saved the Panthers in the 11th hour last year after Delhomme struggled both in his production and staying healthy. I’m curious to see how he will do this season at the helm. He finished last year going 4-1 to finish the year at 8-8 with impressive victories over the Vikings and the eventual champs in the Saints. And as we’ve learned in previous years, anything can happen in the NFC South.

Another plus for this ball club is that the Panthers won’t have to completely rely on Moore to win due to the fact that their running game is the best in football. Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams provide a potent one-two punch. Williams provides the speed, vision, and evasive abilities, whereas Stewart brings excellent downhill and power running.

Steve Smith is one of three guys left who were on the Super Bowl team just six years ago. He has shown that he can still produce no matter who is under center. The Panthers just need another receiving option, but who? Dwayne Jarrett has yet to fulfill his potential out of USC. I will be keeping a close eye on the Panthers’ passing game, or lack thereof.

All in all, the Panthers will most likely finish third in the division behind the Falcons and Saints at 9-7. They just don’t have the firepower and consistency necessary to win this division.

Panthers prepare for their turn to play in the draft

The Carolina Panthers should have options aplenty tonight as they join the NFL draft after sitting out Round 1.
They held onto their 2011 first-round pick and are expected to do so again today, which would end a two-year stretch of trading away a future first-rounder.

Carolina’s long wait is now over as they’ll be closely watching tonight as the picks ahead of them come off the board.

The Panthers are situated at the midpoint of the second round, No. 48 overall, and would prefer to land a defensive lineman or wide receiver, but also could opt for a cornerback.

Based on pre-draft projections, nothing much happened in the first round to detract from players who were expected to be available when the draft resumes tonight.

There continues to be a good chance Carolina can come away with a defensive lineman, especially a tackle, or a wide receiver since those are perhaps the two deepest positions in the draft.

Smith suffers broken arm

Carolina Panthers receiver Steve Smith broke his left arm in Sunday’s 41-9 victory over the New York Giants.

Coach John Fox said that Smith broke his radius and will have surgery on Monday.

Smith seemingly was hurt after catching a 27-yard touchdown pass early in the third quarter. He finished the game with five catches for 60 yards and the season with 65 catches for 982 yards and seven touchdowns.

December May Hold Answers For Panthers

Carolina Panthers coach John Fox tells his players every year around this time that the most important month of their football season just started – that they will be remembered by what they do in December.

At first glance, that theory wouldn’t seem to hold in 2009. The Panthers are 4-7, and they’d probably have to win all five of their remaining games to have a shot at a playoff wild-card spot.

The odds of five straight wins for this ill-fated bunch? I’d put it at about one in 100. So, in playoff terms, December will almost certainly be meaningless to Carolina.

But here are four ways that December is going to be very important to the Panthers:

Panthers running on empty at fullback position

Aside from his daughter’s signature, there’s not much Brad Hoover likes about the cast he’s wearing on his right foot and ankle.

“I wish they’d cut it off right now,” he said Thursday.

The sight of Hoover on crutches only begins to tell the story of the dilemma the Carolina Panthers face this week as they try to creatively find ways to address the absence of their top three options to play fullback Sunday against unbeaten New Orleans.

Hoover, the usual starter and a 10-year veteran, has a high ankle sprain that could cause him to miss multiple games.

Let’s give Jake one more shot

You know those movies in which a guy wakes up and walks outside and everybody is gone and he thinks he’s the only human in the world?

He’s wrong, of course. Eventually he’ll be joined by a faithful dog, a woman, usually blonde and a villain. But for a while he believes he’s the only one of his kind.

That’s how I feel this morning. I believe Jake Delhomme should start Sunday.

Some of you will recall that Delhomme was a good quarterback until Arizona came to Charlotte on the 10th day of 2009 for a playoff game. Then he threw five interceptions, and a 7-0 lead became a 33-7 deficit. Neither he nor his team has been the same.

The Cardinals took Jake’s confidence. On Sunday in Glendale, Ariz., I’d give him an opportunity to take it back.

Panthers get Wesley back after ban, cut Lewis

The Carolina Panthers have waived Keith Lewis and activated fellow special teams player Dante Wesley from the reserved-suspended list.

Wesley rejoined the team Tuesday after being suspended one game for launching himself into Tampa Bay returner Clifton Smith on Oct 11. Smith sustained a concussion on the play.

Lewis was signed last week to take Wesley’s roster spot, but was on the inactive list in Carolina’s loss to Buffalo.
