Smith suffers broken arm

Carolina Panthers receiver Steve Smith broke his left arm in Sunday’s 41-9 victory over the New York Giants.

Coach John Fox said that Smith broke his radius and will have surgery on Monday.

Smith seemingly was hurt after catching a 27-yard touchdown pass early in the third quarter. He finished the game with five catches for 60 yards and the season with 65 catches for 982 yards and seven touchdowns.

Panthers running on empty at fullback position

Aside from his daughter’s signature, there’s not much Brad Hoover likes about the cast he’s wearing on his right foot and ankle.

“I wish they’d cut it off right now,” he said Thursday.

The sight of Hoover on crutches only begins to tell the story of the dilemma the Carolina Panthers face this week as they try to creatively find ways to address the absence of their top three options to play fullback Sunday against unbeaten New Orleans.

Hoover, the usual starter and a 10-year veteran, has a high ankle sprain that could cause him to miss multiple games.

Let’s give Jake one more shot

You know those movies in which a guy wakes up and walks outside and everybody is gone and he thinks he’s the only human in the world?

He’s wrong, of course. Eventually he’ll be joined by a faithful dog, a woman, usually blonde and a villain. But for a while he believes he’s the only one of his kind.

That’s how I feel this morning. I believe Jake Delhomme should start Sunday.

Some of you will recall that Delhomme was a good quarterback until Arizona came to Charlotte on the 10th day of 2009 for a playoff game. Then he threw five interceptions, and a 7-0 lead became a 33-7 deficit. Neither he nor his team has been the same.

The Cardinals took Jake’s confidence. On Sunday in Glendale, Ariz., I’d give him an opportunity to take it back.

Panthers get Wesley back after ban, cut Lewis

The Carolina Panthers have waived Keith Lewis and activated fellow special teams player Dante Wesley from the reserved-suspended list.

Wesley rejoined the team Tuesday after being suspended one game for launching himself into Tampa Bay returner Clifton Smith on Oct 11. Smith sustained a concussion on the play.

Lewis was signed last week to take Wesley’s roster spot, but was on the inactive list in Carolina’s loss to Buffalo.

Panthers add depth with DT Tyler

The Carolina Panthers added some needed defensive line help, and cut deeper into their stockpile of future draft picks, Monday night.

The Panthers sent their 2010 fifth-rounder to Kansas City in exchange for defensive tackle Tank Tyler, the Chiefs’ 2007 third-rounder.

Tyler was a player the Panthers have had an eye on for some time. Panthers general manager Marty Hurney personally scouted the Chiefs in the preseason, figuring that in their switch from a 4-3 to a 3-4, someone would shake out for them. He also plucked defensive tackle Louis Leonard from Cleveland after making a similar preseason trip, only to see Leonard break his ankle on the final play of his second regular-season game.
